Differentiating in the FLES classroom

Differentiating in a FLES class can be complicated, since the time we see students is limited, but if done right, it will save you time and get students interacting in the target language. In most activities I create 2-3 different worksheets to reflect the ability levels in the classroom. Some activities, though, can be created to encourage communication among your students in a way that will have ALL of your students engaged. As an example, you can buy this clothing and weather activity for free - for a short time! - in my TPT store.

I made 2 versions of the same worksheet. One has a key, in which each each color has a number, and the other one does NOT have a key. I give the second one to my advanced students, and I demonstrate that they have to ask another student who does have the key: ¿De quĂ© color es la camiseta?, etc. I also leave one of the clothing items blank, to engage students by asking them what their favorite color is. Once I know my students well, I also use intentional grouping, pairing lower level students with more advanced ones, to coach each other.
